Design for remanufacture

Course Summary

Remanufacturing is a term coined for the process of taking a previously sold, worn, non-functional product or component and reviving it to turn it into a like-new condition which thereby extends the product lifecycle.

The process of remanufacturing is becoming increasingly popular across many industries ranging from aerospace to food production thanks to the reduction in resources and offering a more sustainable manufacturing solution.

Following on from the Introduction to remanufacturing course, this self-directed online course will cover design for remanufactured, commonly referred to as DfRem. The course will offer you a full understanding of DfRem highlighting the importance, and the benefits of adopting such a strategy. In addition, the course will also cover the design for 'X' approaches.

By undertaking this course, we hope that it will inspire those working in manufacturing to adopt a remanufacturing process into their business.

This course is funded by the 2014-2020 European Structural and Investment Fund as part of the Advancing Manufacturing Challenge Fund.

The design for remanufacture course is made up of the following modules:

  • The background to design for remanufacture
  • Benefits associated with this process
  • Challenges of design for remanufacture
  • Design for ‘X’ approaches

On completion of the course delegates will be able to:

  • Describe the design for remanufacture
  • Explain the benefits and challenges of design for remanufacture
  • Describe design for ‘X’ approaches

This course has been developed by NMIS Manufacturing Skills Academy with support from The Scottish Institute or Remanufacturing.

This course is suited to manufacturing leaders, operations managers, and others from smaller manufacturing companies who are interested in learning about remanufacturing. We also recommend that participants undertake the Introduction to remanufacturing course, in order to get the best overview of remanufacturing.

The Scottish Institute for Remanufacturing stimulates and supports the remanufacturing community in Scotland and beyond, by providing the catalyst for collaborative links between academia and industry to work effectively on joint projects and demonstrators, identifying funding opportunities, and providing a central hub of knowledge and expertise to allow businesses to develop and sustain remanufacturing business models.

The Scottish Institute for Remanufacturing is a partner of the NMIS Capability Network. Find out more.
