National Manufacturing Institute Scotland

Luxury lightweighting through hydroforming

This event has now ended. You can rewatch the webinar below, or visit our YouTube channel for all other webinars.

About this event

Join us for an interactive session exploring a new hydroforming approach pioneered by the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) that could shake up the luxury car industry.

As the world pushes towards net zero emissions targets, there is an increasing demand across the automotive sector to reduce vehicle weight, and therefore CO2 impact.

NMIS, in collaboration with heritage automotive supplier PAB Coventry, has developed a new hydroforming approach which can reduce the weight of key car components by 24%.

A lightweight revolution

This webinar will introduce a cost-effective forming approach for the automotive industry.

Attendees will hear about how luxury vehicle car parts can be made lighter, potential material savings, and the possibilities this technology represents for the entire automotive sector.

Who should attend?

Whether you’re an avid petrolhead or involved within the automotive supply chain, this webinar is perfect for anyone interested in reducing vehicle weight and emissions in a cost effective way.

You may also be keen to learn how this approach could be tailored to other industries, such as rail and aviation.

Speakers

Jun Liu is a manufacturing engineer within the University of Strathclyde’s Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC). His background is in metallic materials and manufacturing engineering, mainly sheet metal forming technologies.

He received his PhD degree in 2013, focusing on developing a novel superplastic forming process using aluminium and titanium alloys at lower temperatures and faster forming conditions. Before joining AFRC, he was at Imperial College as a post-doctoral researcher working on hot stamping technologies for lightweight applications.

He has expertise in Materials Characterisation, Microstructure, Forming Processes, FE simulation, etc. He is now leading a few research projects at the AFRC on the development of lightweight manufacturing technologies for automotive and aerospace applications.

Please note that this webinar is being recorded and may be made publicly available.
